All About G.I. & B.I. Pipes

by | June 4, 2024

Galvanized Iron (G.I.) and Black Iron Pipes (B.I.) are metal tubes known for their ability to withstand high heat and extreme temperatures. It is commonly used as a medium to transport liquids, gas, or fine solids for structural purposes.

G.I. Pipes are covered with zinc to make the pipe more resistant to rust. The main use of G.I. Pipes are to supply water to residential homes and buildings. The zinc material in galvanized pipes can block corrosion to avoid the build-up of mineral deposits.

B.I. Pipes are uncoated and the black color is from the iron-oxide made on its surface throughout the manufacturing process. It is commonly used to transport natural gas into homes and commercial buildings. The black iron pipe is made without a seam, making it durable and safer to carry gas. It is also utilized for fire sprinkler systems as it is more fire-resistant than galvanized pipe.

TKL offers G.I. and B.I. Pipes in various kinds such as plain end, threaded, welded, and seamless pipe in different specifications:

Thickness: LS-II, Fence Tube, Standard 40 (welded), Standard 80 (seamless)
Diameter (in): 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1 1/4, 1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12

Benefits of using G.I. & B.I. Pipes

Pipes are commonly used in various construction projects due to the following benefits:

1. Durability
Steel pipes have a long life span and it only requires minimal maintenance. It has the ability to resist damage and it can withstand severe weather conditions.

2. Versatility
Steel pipes are versatile as aside from being utilized in construction as scaffolding, fencing and railings, it can also be used in modern decorations to add aesthetic appeal in the structure.

3. Recyclable
Steel pipes are recyclable with less environmental impact. When a pipe reaches its maximum use, it can be melted down and converted into other steel materials.

Uses of Pipes
Pipes are versatile and they have a lot of different uses in the construction sector. Here are some of the common applications.

1. Structural support
Pipes are used in construction as structural support as it provides additional support in the strength of the structure.

2. Pipeline for oil and gas
Black iron pipes are utilized to transport oil, gas, and other extreme utilities as it has iron oxide coating to add strength and durability.

3. Fire sprinkler and heat exchanger system
BI Pipes are utilized as the main material in the fire sprinkler and heat exchanger system due its ability to withstand high temperatures and resistance to fire.

4. Scaffolding
Pipes are utilized as support and elevation in the construction of various structures.
